After weeks of rain the Fal river level was very high - within 1 metre from the bottom of the bridge.
This caused backflow of water up the combined storm overflow into the river which appeared in the car park. Water was gurgling up the wrong way through the drains.
Tim Lobb, long time resident of Grampound, said, "I can't remember the last time I've seen the river this high".
The river didn't burst its banks but it came very close. The recreation ground is on a flood plain and will at times flood from the river - not this time though.

The bowling club and the football field turned into small shallow lakes. This wasn't from the river - it was the surface water that couldn't drain away.
Dean Jenkins, chair of the hall committee said, "thanks to all who helped fill sandbags and pile them against the rear fire door to the hall. It was a precaution as the river levels fell later that day and overnight but the river was very close to flowing over. We also emptied out the container of items that may have been damanged by water - books and CDs for the craft fair"
